Dating site tips (from someone who's never used them...)

Well, today I have the nastiest tummy ache. Not sure why, possibly the huge bowl of lemon turkey and rice I had last night, followed the the MAMMOTH bowl of bread pudding and custard... could be something else. I ate a lot yesterday, just couldn't stop.

Anyway, painful tummy aside, I am quite sleepy this morning. I was up til way past my beddie-byes time playing Puzzle Quest, and before that I was hunting for suitable dates for a friend on www.mysinglefriend.com! My friend asked me to sign up and write a profile for her. She decided this dating site would be 'safer' than others because it's endorsed by Sarah Beeny (That just made me laugh as I know for a fact that while women see Sarah Beeny as a woman who knows a lot about property and cars, men just see her as two biog boobs... but I'm getting off track...) At first I thought "ooh exciting... you're signing up to a dating site... cool!" followed by "hold on a minute, well, isn't that just lazy, you want a man but can't be bothered to write your own profile!" until I actually saw the site. The idea is you sign up, fill out all the usual details about your single friend such as height, profession blah blah, write some nice words in the form of a kind of testimonial, upload a photo and then get your friend to approve what you've written. You can then both browse the website at your leisure, recommending suitable hunks for your unattached friend to blind date!

Well, anyone who hasn't done this before, I tell you it's very very hard to write a full paragraph about a good friend without mentioning their crazy quirks you find funny whilst bearing in mind you're got to make them sound datable and interesting to a complete stranger! What's even more annoying is that you can't go in and edit it afterwards (which I didn't realise) so what you write is set in stone! I think I portrayed my friend quite well, but I'd have liked to say more given the time to think about it. Anyway, after browsing for a bit, I found only two guys I thought suitable for my friend. It's shocking how many guys are on there that have no idea how to attract a woman, even in overview, brief online profile form... So, some tips for you men out there... what NOT to do:
  • Don't post a profile photo of yourself pouting, topless, posing or anything generally up yourself. It just makes us girls think 'player', 'big head' and 'arrogant'.
  • Don't describe yourself as extremely sexy, for the same reasons as above.
  • Don't set your mood to 'I'm feeling wizard' and combine it with a profile picture of yourself with a cartoonish t-shirt and glasses. It screams 'I sit in front of my PC 24 hours a day playing World of Warcraft and secretly want to be an elf from Lord of the Rings or Gandalf.
  • Don't post a photo of yourself looking seriously tangoed, for reason refer to point one.
Examples of what you SHOULD do (which are real examples from the site) are:
  • Do post a profile picture that stands out from the norm, like a mocked up police mug shot (sounds crazy but it made me click through to the full profile!)
  • Do talk about your interests, (unless they just consist of going to the pub or drinking beer) such as 'climbed Mount Kilda before breakfast on a whim'...
  • Do shout about your brilliant job, especially if it's something women will love, such as 'owns a chocolate factory'... women will be flocking to your profile to get a date and a lifetime's supply of galaxy.
  • Do talk about your travels. It makes you sound like you have interests in the world and are willing to explore other countries that may not have Ford Escorts, Burberry caps and larger.
  • Do mention your compassionate side. If you've volunteered in Nepal, tell the world!
Take note men of the single world and you'll do well... just don't LIE about anything on your profile. We'll find out... we'll think you're a total tosser... you won't get to date number two...

Maybe my next post will be about speed dating... I'm thinking that may be the next step in my single friend's hunt for a man and I'm planning to join her (just for the experience of course... can't replace my smelly haha)
