Squat magazine article 5!
You can read this on Squat here!!
Yes, tartan is tipped to be big this Autumn/Winter 08/09. And no, we're not talking kilts and sporrans, or dressing up like Sean Connery or the Krankies. As the temperature takes a nose dive, and the autumn drizzle starts to seep into your bones, wrapping up warm in some highland prints and chunky knits seems very appealing. Wearing tartan can be intimidating however, so if you're not feeling too confident in head to toe Braveheart get up, try a few well chosen accessories such as a belt, bag or head band. On the other hand, if you're bold, go the whole hog in a fab print dress or skirt and some opaque black tights and mary jane shoes (perhaps leave the William Wallace blue face paint for Halloween though!). Try not to mix tartans or you could end up looking like a dog's dinner. Stick to one feature item of clothing and keep the rest simple.
Tartan can be worn in a variety of ways to create different looks. A tartan skirt with a black vest top or casual print t-shirt and chunky boots can create a really edgy punky look, or combined with a pussy bow blouse for a more feminine style. There's also always the preppy schoolgirl route to go down if you're feeling braver, which incidentally is also another Autumn/Winter look this year. Be careful though or you could end up looking more Harajuku than Edinburgh tattoo (unless that's the look you're aiming for!).
If it's too damn miserable outside for you to brave the wet weather, here's a couple of ideas on where to kit yourself out.
Asos.com
As seen on screen (ASOS) is a great online shop for women's (and now men's) clothing and accessories. Updated regularly with new stock and the latest fashion trends, it sells reasonably priced clothing, reflecting what the celebs have been spotted in so you can achieve the same look without breaking the bank. They currently have a good selection of tartan and check print items. Dresses featured start at £30, skirts £25, and pumps at £12.
Oli.co.uk
Oli, as ASOS, allows you to shop by trend and has a good range of items from different designers and shops. The website also has a 'Look book' which you can add items to as you browse the store and drag and drop to create your own look. Featured bag is £35, skirt £25 and trench coat £50.
Get the look right, and you could be setting yourself up for a cosy highland fling (sorry, just couldn't resist a final pun!). Happy shopping!

I write squat articles for the fashion section... and only really know about women's clothes so can't really write about men's... guess it could have been more BBC orientated but I think articles could get a bit boring if I limit it to just what suits a BBC girl!
