Restoring the trust..?
Its said in today's newspapers that MPs are repaying £100,000 worth of public money claimed fraudulently through expense claims on their lavish second homes in an attempt to restore public faith in politics. I'd say it's going to take a hell of a lot more than a measley £100k to do that, especially when we read about issues like the government money for key workers such as nhs workers and teachers, meant to help them buy first homes, has dried up. Some people, in the final stages of the homebuying process, only found out that the money they were promised is no longer available after spending thousands on surveyor and legal fees. Perhaps MPs should be offering these people their ill-gotten gains instead of trying to justify expenditures on helipads, sit-on lawn-mowers and chandeliers..? Fact of the matter is, when you allow people to set their own rules to live and work by, of course they'll set ones favourable to them. Who wouldn't give themselves huge fat salaries for doing nothing but effectively being a member of an elite boys club, and an expense system that doesn't even require proof of purchase?? Just because they're in a position of power and responsibility doesn't mean they're immune to greed and corruption. In fact, aren't they more susceptible? Perhaps its the public who should be deciding how much of OUR money should be spent on their salaries? What a difference that would make!
