The demon barber of Fleet Street

Last night we went to see Sweeney Todd at the cinema. I wasn't sure what to expect although I knew it was a Tim Burton film and likely to be twisted and dark, which it was. London seemed to be continually shrouded in grey overcast skys and fog, and the streets were dark dingy and scummy. The story itself was good, with the barber being separated from his wife when a judge takes a fancy to her and has him arrested and exiled for 15 years. When he returns he is a changed and dark man. The judge has adopted his now 15 year old daughter and his wife is dead. The rest of the story everyone knows... he goes on a killing spree slitting mens throats in his barber chair and chucking them down the chute to the cellar below where Mrs Lovett makes them into meat pies. The film is a musical and I still haven't decided if I'd preferred it without the constant singing, especially the parts with the sailor boy which were slightly annoying (and a tad disturbing due to his wide eyed manic expression). It was also very long which wasn't unnoticed as my butt fell asleep... but in all it was a good film. Helena Bonnham Carter was VERY good, and Johnny Depp played a good psycho, although his accent kept on making me think of Jack Sparrow a bit! Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G and Borat) was also in the film as an Italian barber and was hilariously funny...

Well... got my review at work tomorrow... then off to Malta on Saturday for a (possibly well needed and wanted) week off in the sun.
