Teaching the kid where food comes from

With all of SY's feeding issues early on, I've always been keen to try and make food and eating fun. Cue lots of episodes of "I can cook" on CBeebies (she's now an expert at the "scoop and slide" technique!), lots of role playing making dinner (with copious cups of tea!), and fun plates and cutlery. But I also want her to learn that food doesn't just come in a tin or a packet and that her fruit and veggies grow from the ground (I'll tackle where sausages come from another time... eek!), so yesterday we took a trip to Hewitts Farm to pick some fruit and vegetables. SY loves courgettes, broccoli and beans so this time of year was perfect to go pick these, as well as apples, pears, plums, beetroot, spinach, sweetcorn and Swiss chard.

I'm so glad we went. She laughed and squealed the entire time we were there (most of the squeals were during jumping in massive very wet very muddy puddles! Thanks a lot Peppa pig!) and enjoyed herself so much picking the veggies. She even tried a few things she's not really had before like plums. I'm definitely going back once the pumpkins are ready for an autumn photo shoot!

If you live locally to Bromley/Orpington, I'd recommend Hewitts farm.  Take some wellies and a spare change of clothes for the little one too as it can be muddy, carrier bags and a knife if you're picking veggies that may need cutting. No charge to get in and we got all this for under £5! Bargain!

Hewitts farm is just inside the M25 off junction 4. http://www.hewittsfarm.co.uk
